Things To Think About When Starting a Pressure Washing Business   by Rob Akerost

About 15 years ago a buddy and I started this painting company together that also offered power washing services. It still makes me laugh to this day because my buddy actually worked a full-time job for a mobile telephone company (back when they still installed the in cars) and we used his company van to carry around all our painting supplies. My friend had guts I’ll give him that. He was always getting us into jobs which neither one of us had any idea how to do. That was usually when we would head up to Home Depot, rent a VHS tape on “How to Install A Shower” then show up at a clients house as the “professionals.” We worked for a company that specialized in filling insurance claims for repair. Like if you got water damage from a broken pipe and the insurance paid out money, they could call this company who did a little bit of everything repair wise.

Anyway, part of our painting service was power washing peoples decks and houses. We soon realized we could make some pretty good money at power washing and started charging for it alone and offering it as an add-on service. I eventually left that business to enter a long career in the restaurant industry but my friend continued on and did pretty well for himself. Needless to say, we learned a few things along the way. One of the biggest lessons was the concept of renting before you buy any large equipment. By renting, you get an idea of what features you like and even what equipment you don’t actually even need. My partner and I blew a lot of money up-front because we thought we needed the biggest and best of everything. Actually, we needed a lot less then we thought and could have saved a lot of money starting out.
