How do I transfer 16mm video reels and slides to a computer?

Can someone reccommend me hardware I could possibly find on ebay to do it myself?

How much it would cost to get it professionally done?

I have a bunch of 16mm videos I’d like to transfer to computer as well as photoslides that are aging.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Apparently there are purpose built scanners for converting 16mm film to digital image files, but they seem to be quite expensive (> $10,000). The few I’ve seen docs for anyway.

Then there’s this guy. He’s been fooling around with converting 16mm to digital form using conventional flatbed scanners.

Sounds like a fair amount of work, but fairly inexpensive. With some effort, you could probably end up with a decent end result.

There’s also establishments that’ll do your scanning for you. Like this one:

It includes a handy pricing calculator. From a little playing around with that I’d say you can expect to pay about $50 a film through them or so. But it depends on how many feet you’ve got in each, how many dvd copies you want, stuff like that.

These are just examples. It’d be a good idea to look around more than I did…
